When I planned my trip to San Diego, I couldn’t wait to go.
I had been looking forward to spending time by the ocean, catching up with friends, and enjoying a few days away from everyday life. In my mind, everything had already fallen into place. My flight was booked, my suitcase was packed, and I had a place to stay.
I thought I had planned for everything.

The first day was exactly what I had hoped for.
Beautiful weather.
Good conversation.
That feeling you get when you’re finally away from work and responsibilities, knowing you have a few days to simply enjoy yourself.
Then that evening, everything changed.
One person in our group drank a little too much, and the mood shifted almost instantly.
The laughter disappeared.
Conversations became uncomfortable.
The atmosphere I’d been looking forward to suddenly felt tense and awkward.
I remember sitting there thinking, “This isn’t how I imagined my trip starting.”
As the night went on, I realized I didn’t have to stay in a situation that no longer felt comfortable.
Thankfully, another friend lived nearby and welcomed me into their home for the rest of my visit.
Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful they were there.
But lying in bed that night, one thought kept running through my mind.
What if they hadn’t been?
I would have been searching for a hotel at the last minute in a city where I thought I already had a place to stay.
That thought has stayed with me ever since.
Not because the trip was ruined.
But because it taught me something I had never thought about before.
Always have a backup plan.
Not because you expect your friends to disappoint you.
Not because you expect something to go wrong.
But because life is unpredictable.

The next morning, I woke up still feeling disappointed.
Part of me wanted to let that one uncomfortable night define the rest of my vacation.
Instead, I decided to get outside.
I walked along the beach.
I watched sailboats drift across the ocean.
I took a deep breath and reminded myself why I had traveled there in the first place.
Little by little, I stopped replaying the night before in my head.
I started noticing the sound of the waves instead.
The fresh ocean air.
The people laughing on the beach.
The feeling of finally slowing down.
That’s when I realized something.
Travel isn’t always perfect.
Sometimes the destination is beautiful, but the circumstances aren’t.
Sometimes people surprise you.
Sometimes plans change.
The important part isn’t avoiding every problem.
It’s deciding that one difficult moment doesn’t deserve the rest of your vacation.

By my last evening in San Diego, I wasn’t thinking about the uncomfortable situation anymore.
I was standing on the beach watching one of the most beautiful sunsets I’d ever seen.
It reminded me that every day gives us another chance to decide what memories we want to take home.
Looking back now, I don’t remember San Diego as the trip where everything went wrong.
I remember it as the trip that taught me one of the most valuable travel lessons I’ve learned.
Have a backup plan.
Protect your peace.
Be flexible.
And never let one difficult moment steal an experience you worked so hard to create.
Because sometimes the best souvenirs we bring home aren’t things at all.
They’re the lessons we never expected to learn. Have you ever had a trip that didn’t go as planned but still taught you something valuable?
